Gifts of the Magi—Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh

The Oily Home Companion

We all know the Christmas story… Jesus is born and the magi, or wise men, follow a star to come greet him. When they do, they bring three gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

“After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshipped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” - Matthew 2:11

Have you ever wondered why they chose these gifts? What is the significance of these three treasures?

Gold

The gift we are all probably most familiar with. It represents purity and value. This was a common gift for royalty at the time of Jesus’ birth. This symbolized honor and the deity of Christ.

Frankincense

Frankincense was given as an oil, which has been referred to as a Holy oil by Middle Eastern cultures. It was used in religious ceremonies, due to its ability to enhance spiritual practice. It is also thought to be an antiseptic and disinfectant, which would kill harmful bacteria from the skin’s surface. This would have been valuable after the birth of Jesus for the baby, as well as the mother.

Myrrh

Myrrh is a bitter oil that was used in ancient times as an embalming agent, antiseptic, and Holy anointing oil, similar to Frankincense. The gift of myrrh may have represented the death of Jesus that would come later on, while also providing a valuable postpartum gift for the family.

At the time of Jesus’ birth, these gifts were extremely valuable and rare. Today, we can enjoy the benefits of frankincense and myrrh in the form of essential oils! Connect to the rich history of Christ’s birth this season by giving yourself the sacred gifts of frankincense and myrrh, in the form of Young Living Essential Oils.
